Tell Congress to Support the Jabara Heyer NO HATE Act

Posted on August 09, 2019 in Action Alerts

We need better hate crime data and we need it now.

Under the Hate Crime Statistics Act of 1990, the federal government collects data on hate crimes reported by law enforcement agencies across the country. Each year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) publishes the data in an annual report.

According to the most recent edition of the FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics report, which was published in November 2018 and based on 2017 data, law enforcement agencies reported 7,175 hate crime incidents. This marked a 17 percent...

TAKE ACTION: Support the NO BAN Act!

Posted on August 01, 2019 in Action Alerts

The National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants Act (“NO BAN Act”) is a historic civil rights bill that would essentially end the Muslim, Refugee and Asylum Bans and prevent discrimination based on faith or national origin in immigration.

Since this discriminatory policy was announced just over two years ago, the consequences of these Bans have been devastating: families torn apart; children unable to see their parents, to visit their grandparents, people forced to miss the births, deaths, graduations, weddings and funerals of loved ones.

The NO BAN Act will end this discriminatory policy and amend the Immigration...

Extend and Re-Designate TPS for Syria

Posted on July 30, 2019 in Action Alerts

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS)’s temporary protected status (TPS) allows citizens of specified war-torn or disaster-impacted countries to live and work in the U.S. Removing a country from the list requires nationals present in the U.S. to either find another visa program or return to their home country.

Syria has been designated for the TPS program since 2012 due to ongoing armed conflict in that country, and at present there are 7,000 Syrians living in the U.S. under TPS.

By August 1, DHS and the State Department must decide whether conditions in Syria require the U.S. to extend protection for current Syrian TPS holders and whether to allow more Syrians already in the U.S. to also apply for protection.

Posted on July 22, 2019 in Action Alerts

Congress is voting soon on H.Res. 246, a resolution undermining advocacy for Palestinian human rights by attacking the BDS campaign with factual misrepresentations. Click here to take action:

BACKGROUND

From the tea boycott of the American revolution to the Montgomery bus boycott of the civil rights movement, political boycotts have been a fundamental part of our country’s progress, and the right to engage in these boycotts is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.

In recent years, however, there have been many unconstitutional efforts...

TAKE ACTION: Send Comments on Info Collection on 2020 Census by Aug. 7

Posted on July 31, 2018 in Action Alerts

The Census Bureau has come under fire for several issues that can negatively impact an accurate count on the upcoming 2020 census. The Census Bureau must ensure an accurate count which is why we have advocated for adding a Middle Eastern North African ethnic category to the questionnaire for over three years. Decades of research done by the Bureau itself has showed that adding a MENA category by way of a new combined question format would be beneficial in providing a more accurate population count. All this data and research were disregarded under the context that the Bureau did...

URGENT: Call your senators and urge them to oppose the confirmation of Kenneth Marcus

Posted on June 07, 2018 in Action Alerts

The Senate will vote on the confirmation of Kenneth Marcus today at 12:30pm. Marcus has been nominated for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education.

His appointment would be a huge setback for civil rights protections in our academic environment. Marcus has been a longtime advocate for the adoption of an overly-broad, political definition of anti-Semitism, which includes criticism of the state of Israel. This is just one of the many ways his appointment would undermine civil rights protections in academia. See our letter for more details.

Throughout his career, Marcus has:...

Protect the Civil Rights of All Americans; Tell the Senate Committee to Reject Kenneth Marcus’ nomination to the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Education

Posted on December 08, 2017 in Action Alerts

This week, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions held a hearing for nominees to serve in the Departments of Labor & Education, including Kenneth Marcus, nominee to lead the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) at the Department of Education.

As our political environment has seen an increase in racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, anti-immigrant, anti-women, and anti-LGBTQ incidents, the OCR needs a director that can address these concerns without bias and with equal application of civil rights protections for all. Kenneth Marcus fails to meet this standard....
