Rep. Omar Backlash: All Too Familiar to Arab Americans

Posted by Heba Mohammad on February 13, 2019 in Blog

This week, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) attempted to break the dam on a discussion that has been held back for too long: the sanctity of Israel in our U.S. Congress, and the role of powerful pro-Israel organizations like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in maintaining a taboo around criticisms of Israel. While the dishonest backlash to Omar's tweets has largely succeeded in shifting the conversation away from U.S.-Israel policy and into a debate about anti-Semitism, it is critical to take a moment to focus on the actual positions Omar was communicating.

Watching the online debate unfold, the...

Republicans Play the Israel Card and Fail

Posted on January 12, 2019 in Washington Watch

By Dr. James J. Zogby

As this past week began, with the shutdown of parts of the US government entering its third week, Republicans, desperate to force the Democrat's hand, decided to play the "Israel card." The effort failed.

The standoff between the White House and the Democrats that caused the shutdown is the result of President Trump's insistence that any new congressionally approved budgets for this year must include over $5 billion to cover the cost of the "wall" he has promised to build on the US border...

Affirming Free Speech for Some and At the Expense of Others

Posted by Suher Adi on October 23, 2018 in Blog

While it has been accepted that political speech is protected through the First Amendment, the current political climate is challenging this notion. Anti-BDS legislation has been passed in 25 state legislatures and is also currently pending in 12 other states. There is also legislation on the federal level, both the “Anti-Semitism Awareness” and “Israel Anti-Boycott” acts have been introduced as attempts to silence Palestinian human rights activists. Most recently with the recent appointment of Kenneth Marcus to the head of the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in the Department of Education (ED), the current political climate has...

Trump and The Attempted Erasure of Palestinians

Posted by Suher Adi on August 28, 2018 in Blog

The Trump Administration has been working toward presenting his “deal of the century” and delivering Palestinian-Israeli peace during his tenure in office. Resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been seen as a key issue to delivering “peace and stability” to the region. Every President in recent history has attempted to present themselves as an unbiased broker, but Trump has even done away with that pretense.

As with any administration before his, Trump came into office understanding that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will remain prominent in the headlines, and thus would continue to be a major foreign policy focus. And just like other...

Washington Watch: The Struggle for Palestinian Rights: Then and Now

Posted on August 04, 2018 in Washington Watch

By James J. Zogby

Forty years ago this month I left a tenured teaching position and moved to Washington, DC to run the Palestine Human Rights Campaign (PHRC). It wasn't easy doing Palestine work back then, and Washington was an especially inhospitable city in which to pursue my new vocation. Advocating for Palestinian rights can still be difficult, but so much has changed in the past four decades that I thought it might be useful to reflect on where we were in the 1970's and where we are today. Back then, major pro-Israel and establishment American Jewish organizations threw their full weight...

Posted on July 21, 2018 in Washington Watch

By Dr. James J. Zogby This past week by a vote of 62 to 55, Israel's Knesset passed legislation called "Israel as a Nation-State of the Jewish People." Heralding the passage of the bill, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described it as "a defining moment in the annals of Zionism and the annals of the state of Israel...We have determined in law the founding principle of our existence. Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people, and respects the rights of all its citizens."   In reaction, Israeli hardliners and their supporters in the US celebrated the...
