“The United States enjoys significant leverage over [Afghanistan and Pakistan].”

Posted on October 07, 2011 in Campaign Statements

"It is in the interests of all three nations to see that Afghanistan and the Afghanistan/ Pakistan border region are rid of the Taliban and other insurgent groups.... Pakistan should understand that any connection between insurgent forces and Pakistan’s security and intelligence forces must be severed. The United States enjoys significant leverage over both of these nations. We should not be shy about using it."

Lecturer: campaign rhetoric damages Arab relations

Posted by on October 07, 2011 in News Clips

One Arab-American scholar said Thursday night the current crop of Republican Iowa caucus contenders could further damage the U.S. reputation abroad.

James Zogby, the president of the Arab American Institute, said he's concerned the political anti-Islamic rhetoric used in the GOP presidential-nomination race may strain U.S.-Arab relations.

"They can't have an intelligent conversation about the Middle East," Zogby, who spoke at Old Brick, told The Daily Iowan this week. "They're not aware of the consequences of their actions. They don't seem to have a clue that what they say is heard all over the world."

Zogby, who spoke...

A wonderful welcome in New Hampshire

Posted by on October 04, 2011 in Blog

Tonight I had the honor to deliver an address to the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire. It was the inauguration of a four part series entitled "Primary Concerns: Critical Foreign Policy Issues at the 2012 Ballot Box" - an effort to prepare the state's voters on the issues the candidates should be raising (but probably won't) when they come through campaigning for the 2012 primary election. Pleased that the Arab World came first!

It was a full auditorium. The questions were great and we sold lots of copies of "Arab Voices". Folks here are getting ready to challenge the...

Beginning the Policy Debate from Iowa and New Hampshire

Posted by on October 04, 2011 in Blog

As the 2012 election draws nearer, AAI President Jim Zogby once again heads to Iowa and New Hampshire to meet with voters, activists, and newspaper editorial boards. Four years ago Jim made a similar trip, where he was met with thoughtful questions and engaged crowds, particularly on issues related to the Middle East. Voters in Iowa and New Hampshire in 2007 seemed eager to learn more about the challenges faced by the U.S. in the region, but also cognizant of the need for a new foreign policy direction.

Iowan’s concern for the Middle East peace process had a profound...

2011 National Leadership Conference

Posted by on October 01, 2011 in Blog

AAI and NNAAC convened over 200 community members at The National Leadership Conference to build community capacity and confront challenges both at home and abroad ahead of the 2012 elections. Arab American leaders from across the country gathered in Dearborn, Michigan to work on three distinct albeit complementary tracks: Advocacy, Community Building and Organizing. Within this framework and with the realization that we can most effectively advocate for change here at home, the conference goals were to: Get Arab Americans involved and their voices heard (Community Building) Promote better understanding of the Arab world (Organizing) Promote the civil rights...

“Just before…Netanyahu came to the United States, [Obama] threw Israel under the bus”

Posted on September 22, 2011 in Campaign Statements

“Just before Bibi Netanyahu came to the United States, he threw Israel under the bus, tried to negotiate for Israel. The right course -- if you disagree with an ally, you talk about it privately. But in public, you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with your allies. The right course for us is not to try and negotiate for Israel. The right course is to stand behind our friends, to listen to them, and to let the entire world know that we will stay with them and that we will support them and defend them.”

“We have a civilization that is antithetical to the civilization of the jihadists”

Posted on September 22, 2011 in Campaign Statements

"We are not being attacked and we were not attacked because of our actions. We were attacked, as Newt talked about, because we have a civilization that is antithetical to the civilization of the jihadists. And they want to kill us because of who we are and what we stand for. And we stand for American exceptionalism, we stand for freedom and opportunity for everybody around the world, and I am not ashamed to do that."

“The Palestinians must know their gambit comes with consequences”

Posted on September 20, 2011 in Campaign Statements

“The Palestinians must know their gambit comes with consequences in particular that America will have to reconsider the $4 billion in assistance we have provided to the Palestinians over the last 17 years… We should close the PLO office in Washington if the U.N. grants the standing of a Palestinian state.”

“It was wrong…to suggest the 1967 borders should be the starting point for…negotiations”

Posted on September 20, 2011 in Campaign Statements

“it was wrong for this Administration to suggest the 1967 borders should be the starting point for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. When you consider this suggestion was made on the eve of the Israeli Prime Minister’s visit, we see in this American Administration a willingness to isolate a close ally and to do so in a manner that is insulting and naïve.”
