Washington, D.C.- On Monday, July 15, 2019, AAI President James Zogby issued the following statement:
President Trump's recent two day Twitter tirade targeting four women Members of Congress was nothing more than a frightening racist appeal to what he considers his "base." This is not a racist dog whistle, this is a siren marking the unmistakable intent of this president to make the spread of bigotry and animosity among Americans the centerpiece of his electoral strategy.
On the one hand, we have seen this before: Father Coughlin in the 1930s, George Wallace in the 1960s and 1970s, Pat Buchanan in the 1990s, and David Duke in this century. As dangerous as each of these men were, Trump's resorting to crude nativism is more dangerous - precisely because he is the President of the United States. This nativist rhetoric is inseparable from this administration’s policies, from the announcement of ICE raids targeting migrant families and the cruelty on the border, to the failed push to undercount migrant communities in the census through a citizenship question and beyond.
Equally troubling to the President’s bigotry is the silence of the leadership of the Republican Party. Surely in the ranks of the GOP, there must be men and women who are both mortified by their President's language and frightened by the direction he is leading their party and the country. It is difficult to fathom their lack of courage in speaking out during this critical moment for the future of our country. As we condemn this dangerous degrading of our unity as a country, we stand with the targeted Congresswomen whose commitment to an inclusive America proves that they understand what this country is about better than this President and those who dispute their Americanness.
