In a new report entitled “Gaza: 1.5 Million People Trapped in Despair”, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) outlines the conditions on the ground six months after Israel launched its three week military operation in Gaza. The report calls for immediate humanitarian actions to give the people of Gaza their right to a “normal and dignified life”.
According to the ICRC, Gazans were “already facing a major crisis” prior to the military operation. Following the operation the conditions on the ground have only become more devastating. The report outlines major sources of complication including public health issues, the ban on reconstruction, a lack of access to sufficient health care, “dramatic” poverty and “soaring” unemployment.
ICRC, which has had a permanent presence in the area since 1968, appeals for immediate humanitarian actions, and credible political steps to be taken to bring about change for the people of Gaza.
