About

Ensuring a fair and accurate count.

Democratic representation of We The People requires an accurate ascertainment of who “We The People” are. From drawing political districts at state and federal levels to determining how billions of dollars are spent, the census helps shape our democracy.

Every ten years, the US Census Bureau conducts the constitutionally mandated census. Like many historically underrepresented communities, Arab Americans are significantly undercounted, and deemed a “hard-to-count” community. One reason for this is because the US Census does not contain an ethnic category that accurately captures Arab ancestry. The Arab American Institute has long advocated for a “Middle Eastern and North African” or “MENA” ethnic category to be included on the census form as a way to capture accurate data about the Arab American community.

AAIF is committed to ensuring that Arab Americans are accurately represented in the decennial census and are fairly represented in the democratic tapestry in the critical processes of enumeration and apportionment.
