AAI Joins Coalition Letter on Legislative Response to White Nationalist Violence

In responding to the scourge of white supremacist violence, Congress should not harm the very communities it's trying to protect.

On September 4, 2019, the Arab American Institute joined the ACLU, Brennan Center for Justice, Color of Change, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Muslim Advocates, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), and Southern Poverty Law Center in a letter to relevant House and Senate committees on the appropriate legislative response to white supremacist violence.

The letter urges members of Congress to prioritize oversight and data collection over misguided proposals that would jeopardize the civil rights and civil liberties of targeted or vulnerable communities. In particular, the letter states the coalition's opposition to creating a new federal crime of "domestic terrorism," reintroducing countering violent extremism (CVE) programs, and expanding surveillance authorities.
