"As an Arab American woman I am proud of the recent changes in the Middle East and the opportunity women there have to participate in the newly accessible civic forum. Vital Voices has worked for years to support women in these environments, through local communities and women's networks, to improve the lives and futures of women both inside and outside the Arab World. To honor their commitment at this time in history not only makes me proud of what they've done, but hopeful for the work they will continue to do in the region." - AAI Executive Director, Maya Berry.
On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, Vital Voices, a leading international women's organization devoted to empowering emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the globe, will receive an award for Institutional Excellence at the Arab American Institute Foundation’s (AAIF) 13th annual Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala. In making the decision to honor Vital Voices, the Gibran Awards Committee cited that “Vital Voices exemplifies the universal values embodied in the work of the award’s namesake, Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet and other works that celebrate the common desire of all peoples for dignity, peace, and respect; values that define Vital Voices programs.” The committee highlighted the organization’s inspiring work and commitment to support prosperity by educating women entrepreneurs and promoting social development in the Middle East.
Alyse Nelson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vital Voices, will receive the Award on the organization’s behalf. Nelson has been involved in promoting the principles of Vital Voices for twelve years.
