Mark Brzezinski, a partner at McGuireWoods in Washington DC, where he manages the firm’s international practice. Mr. Brzezinski was the Director of Southeast European and Russian/Eurasian affairs of the National Security Council under President Clinton. He discussed the recent recent tragic crash of a Russian airliner that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska, several senior members of the Polish Administration, and flight crew.
On April 10th, on the way to a ceremony for the 70th Anniversary of the massacre of Katyn in which 21,000 Poles were killed by Soviet troops, the Polish Delegation’s plane crashed over Smolensk, Russia. Mr. Brzezinski, a Polish-American, spoke about both tragedies and the affect they have had on Polish national identity. “The Massacre [Katyn] that occurred 70 years ago in which this presidential delegation would commemorate is much like Pearl Harbor is to the American psyche,” Brzezinski said.
Amjad Atallah, Co-Director of the Middle East Task Force at the New America Foundation, spoke about a new IDF order which could facilitate the deportation and/or imprisonment of tens of thousands of Palestinians currently living in the West Bank. “If you’re not Jewish and you’re Palestinian, you can arbitrarily be determined to be illegally there” said Atallah. “Your presence there requires now a permit but the order doesn’t explain who would provide that”, he added. Mr. Atallah also explained that this decree extends to U.S. and British citizens work in the West Bank.
