If there is one thing Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu is known for, besides accommodating the radical right’s colonization of the West Bank, it is his frequent use of platitudes about Israel’s exceptionalism. Bibi recently flaunted Israel’s exceptional stability in a region rocked by mass protests, shortly before Israel itself was hit by large demonstrations. This of course led to a pretty funny and widely popular music video juxtaposing his remarks with scenes of the protests.

The video accumulated 50,000 views in less than two weeks. Even if the domestic situation in Israel were truly prosperous and free of racism and economic inequality (which of course it is not), Bibi’s sloganeering about Israeli stability would still be a lie as long as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict raged on. True, Israel is able to carve out periods of calm for itself through oppressive security measures, but the situation remains constantly volatile beneath the surface, and it is only a matter of time before another flurry of violence is triggered.

The only true means of securing stability for the region is for all of the region’s people to be granted their basic rights. Central to such an effort is achieving freedom from the Israeli occupation for the Palestinian people.
