The Arab American Institute and Foundation’s Inaugural Celebration feted our community’s involvement in and commitment to the political process. Over five hundred distinguished guests attended the sold-out gala here in Washington, D.C. on the eve of the Presidential Inauguration.

Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, the newly appointed U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA), Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), Tina Tchen, the White House Director of Public Liaison, were among the attendees. Each briefly addressed the crowd about the significance of marking this historic event and the kind of change they hope it would bring to the Arab American community and the Middle East.

Dean Obeidallah and Aron Kader, two Arab American comedians from the popular “Comedy Central’s Axis of Evil Comedy Tour”, filled the house with laughter. Guests enjoyed hours of dining, great music and plenty of mingling.

The event, one of many that were taking place that night throughout the city, received quite a buzz from different media outlets. Al Jazeera English broadcast live updates every hour, and Washington Note’s Steven Clemons sent out a twitter about the event on Huffington Post’s inaugural blog. Arab News wrote, “The Arab American Institute (AAI), a Washington, D.C.-based organization which serves as the political and policy research arm of the Arab American community, hosted its ball at the Fairmont Hotel. The gala included a bevy of star-studded celebrities in the Arab-American circle as guests dined and spent the evening celebrating this historic moment in American history.”

And this from the Boston Globe: “Across town at the Fairmont Hotel, Queen Noor of Jordan told a gathering hosted by the Arab American Institute that Obama’s inauguration brought ‘a new hope and possibility of renewal and activism, and hard, hard work together.’ She said she believes Obama would work to find ‘long-term solutions to problems not only in this country’ but also in the Mideast, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
