AAI Statement on Dramatic Cut to Refugee Admissions

Arab American Institute Executive Director Maya Berry issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s decision to reduce refugee admissions.

We are deeply disappointed by the Administration’s decision to dramatically lower refugee admissions, especially at a time where there is such great need in the world.

The Trump Administration has refused to accept any more than 45,000 this year, half of the previous administration’s plans and counter to the recommendation of refugee resettlement organizations, and  counterterrorism and military leaders. This decision is despite the United Nations’ determination...

AAI Statement on Presidential Proclamation Regarding the Muslim Ban

Arab American Institute Executive Director Maya Berry issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s third try at the Muslim Ban.

The Trump Administration’s attempt to window dress their Muslim Ban by presidential proclamation doesn’t fool anyone. The proclamation expands the xenophobic policies that discriminate against individuals predominantly because of their Muslim faith or national origin. It’s no surprise that facing Supreme Court arguments the Trump Administration would try to play one more shell game to circumvent a potential ruling. Shamefully...

AAI Response to Charlottesville

AAI Statement in Response to the Tragedy in Charlottesville

We are devastated but sadly not surprised by what we all witnessed on Saturday in Charlottesville. Whether these extremists are called white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazis or fascists – they have no legitimate place in the dialogue of our nation. Hate is not a view or position; it is an evil that must be fought.

We stand in solidarity today with allies who demand that we speak and act with moral clarity against hatred, bigotry and racism. That includes demanding...

Statement on Passing of Longtime AAI Friend and Ally Fred Rotondaro

Posted by Arab American Institute on June 29, 2017 in Blog

Fred Rotondaro, an Italian American leader, died on June 26th. He was, by every measure, a remarkable man. What many may not realize is that he was also responsible with providing Arab Americans political access at a time, in the 1970s and 1980s, when many in Washington refused to work with our community. Fred always led by example and took the time to teach Arab American leaders the nuts and bolts of ethnic politics. He gave our community a boost when others would not. He was there for the...
