Congressman Nick Rahall, an Arab American Democrat, has served West Virginia's 3rd District with distinction for 34 years. As Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, Nick has been fighting for jobs, mine safety, energy independence, ending war in the Middle East and caring for Americans veterans.

It should not be surprising that in a nasty election year, he is under attack. What is disturbing, however, is that the line of attack has focused on Nick's national leadership role in the Arab American community.

Listen to this ad (video below) being run on West Virginia television by the West Virginia Conservative Foundation (WVCF).

This is a disgraceful effort at "Arab-baiting". In the ad Nick Rahall is being attacked because he gives voice to the "issues Arab American care about." But just what are those issues? According to a recent poll, here are the issues, in order of priority, that Arab Americans say they most care about: jobs and the economy; the war in Iraq; health care; education; deficits; domestic security; and immigration. Sound familiar? It ought to, because these are the issues that all Americans care about!

None of this, of course, matters to the WVCF. They appear to want to portray Arab Americans as some alien and threatening group that isn't "like the rest of us."I don't believe that this effort at Arab-baiting will work. West Virginians know better. They know Nick Rahall.

We also know Nick and we must now step up and support him.

Here's what you can do:

- write to the National Republican Congressional Committee. Tell them to speak out and condemn the West Virginia Conservative Foundation.

- email Congressman Rahall with a message of support. Tell him. "Thank you Nick. You stood with us, and now we will stand with you."

Please do this today.
