Rep. Allen West is hosting a briefing on Islam on July 25. Bearing in mind that this is the Congressman who has called Islam a “very vile and very vicious enemy that we have allowed to come in this country because we ride around with bumper stickers that say co-exist; “ and has said that “Islam is a totalitarian theocratic political ideology, it is not a religion,” it’s not surprising that the briefing is being given by Citizens for National Security (CNS), a Florida-based non-profit organization that provides “resources for individuals and organizations on the ground working daily to resist the threats to our country from militant Islam.” According to CNS, these threats include social and religious organizations and schools. They even have an entire Task Force dedicated to rooting them out.
At the briefing—titled Homegrown Jihad in the USA: Culmination of the Muslim Brotherhood's 50-year History of Infiltrating America—CNS plans to release the names of individuals it claims are members of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. According to Leitner, “this database contains thousands of names and hundreds of organizations, and is growing each day as the CFNS research project expands.” When we read this, and then re-read it, all we could think about was how the “research project” seems like a glorified version of Kevin Bacon's Six Degrees of Separation game. Except, of course, for the stomach-turning fact that the work of this group will have a real and potentially dangerous impact on people’s lives. The fact that this group exists in today's political climate is upsetting, but expected. The fact that an elected official is the one promoting this work, however, is nothing short of appalling.
