October 19, 2012 - As of October 13, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has received 2,614 applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Syrian nationals in the U.S. On March 29, 2012 Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano approved the status for Syrian Nationals already residing within the U.S. In the registration period that lasted from March 29, 2012 to September 25, 2012, USCIS has so far granted 273, only denying five applicants.

Arab Americans turned out in historically high numbers for yesterday’s New Jersey primary contest between Democrats Bill Pascrell and Steve Rothman in the newly-drawn 9th congressional district. Arab American voters rallied overwhelming support for Pascrell, a member of Congress who has had a long history of engagement with the community during his 16-year tenure in Congress. Washington, D.C. – On Monday, June 4, Rights Working Group will release a new report, The NSEERS Effect: A Decade of Racial Profiling, Fear, and Secrecy, which documents the ongoing impacts of the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), a long discredited and discriminatory program launched by the federal government in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The report recommends a number of needed reforms to mitigate damage caused by the program.
