Capitol Hill Briefing: Revitalizing the Arab Peace Initiative Ten Years Later

Washington, DC – March 23, 2012 – The Arab American Institute (AAI), J-Street and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will host a panel on Capitol Hill next Tuesday to discuss revitalizing American political efforts in favor of the stalled Arab Peace Initiative as an attainable path to Israeli-Palestine peace. Since its introduction in 2002, the historic initiative, proposed by the Arab League, has been effectively ignored by the Israeli government despite wide-held praise for the plan’s viability from the international community. Ten years later, there remains no  viable alternative course for a lasting peace agreement and the Arab Peace Initiative still remains an attractive framework for solving the Arab-Israeli conflict.

AAI President James Zogby stated:

Ten years ago the Arab League launched their groundbreaking Arab Peace Initiative (API). With this initiative, the collective Arab leadership made it clear that their conflict with Israel was not existential; it was one of territory and the implementation of rights. Though rejected by Israel, and under-appreciated by our own government, we believe the API remains a valuable and viable path toward peace.
