Arab Americans Mourn the Loss of Senator Wellstone

WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today the nation learned of the tragic loss of one of our most distinguished and respected Senators, Paul Wellstone. He was a man of principle and integrity who never tired of the fight for justice. A fighter for Minnesota, he was a friend of the working family, environment and those who needed a champion. Senator Wellstone was also a real friend of the Arab American community.

The Arab American Institute extends its deepest condolences to the Wellstone family and to all those staff, volunteers and friends who were committed to his vision and service.

Arab American Institute President Dr. James Zogby knew Senator Wellstone for many years. He issued this statement upon hearing the news of the Senator’s passing:

“The United States Senate lost a progressive leader and Arab Americans lost a dear friend today. I had the privilege of knowing Paul Wellstone and calling him a friend since we worked together on the Jesse Jackson campaign in the 1980s. I have proudly supported each of his Senate races. He was passionate about his ideals and a committed champion for human rights and peace. During a 1998 trip to Gaza with President Clinton, Senator Wellstone was moved by the desperate situation that Palestinians live in and was distressed by the stalled peace process. More recently, we met to discuss his interest in helping address Palestinian humanitarian needs and to promote economic development for Palestinians.

“The death of Senator Wellstone, his wife Sheila and his daughter Marcia is a national tragedy. For many of us, it’s a personal one as well. I, along with many others, will deeply miss him.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Senator Wellstone’s family and all the friends and family of those who were lost today.”
