US Senate Hopefuls Meet with Arab Americans

NEWARK, NJ- Robert Torricelli (D) and Doug Forrester® will meet with Arab American voters from across the state when the Arab American Institute (AAI) hosts a New Jersey Candidates’ Night to give voters the opportunity to meet candidates in the upcoming congressional elections.

Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-District 8), Assemblyman E. Scott Garrett®, Congressional candidate for District 5, former NJ Secretary of State Reverand DeForest “Buster” Soaries®, Congressional candidate for District 12, and A. Jared Silverman®, Congressional candidate for District 8, will also speak at the event.

The AAI Candidates’ Night will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2002 from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel located at 128 Frontage Road in Newark.

As in past election years, the event allows voters to raise community concerns to candidates running for public office and help Arab Americans cast an informed vote on Election Day. Last year the event attracted over 400 voters. This is the third consecutive year AAI will host a candidates’ night in New Jersey.

“With the community’s growing political clout, there are new challenges that need to be addressed as a result of the 9/11 tragedy. Furthermore, this race is critical because of its national importance and how it can affect the majority in the U.S. Senate. Community leaders are working with all the congressional candidates to ensure the community’s concerns are brought to their attention,” said AAI National Field Coordinator Abdallah Al-Zuabi.

Organized by a steering committee of Arab American Democrats and Republicans, co-sponsors of the AAI event include the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Palestinian American Congress, and TechnoChief Consulting and Services.

“It’s a rare opportunity to interact with Congressional candidates and discover where they stand on the issues before casting a vote,” said Jean AbiNader, AAI managing director.
