AAI Chair Meets with Bush

Washington, DC – Today, one day before the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, President George W. Bush met with Arab American and Muslim leaders at the Afghanistan embassy. During his remarks to the press, the President repeatedly emphasized that Arab Americans and Muslims are an integral part of the American mosaic who share in the grief that all Americans are experiencing as this tragic anniversary approaches. The President also stressed the themes of inclusion and thanked the group for their work in promoting understanding.

At their private meeting with the President, community members thanked him for his leadership in working to stem the backlash against Arab and Muslim Americans and to unite the nation. During their open and frank discussion, AAI Chairman George Salem raised community concerns with the expanded use of secret evidence, profiling and the Administration’s approach to the current crisis in the Middle East.

“The President was clear in his concern and appreciation for Arab Americans at this critical time. As we approach the anniversary of September 11, we must remain united. The President’s early leadership in stemming the tide of hate and violence after the terrorist attacks brought this nation together and we appreciate his public reinforcement of this unifying message today,” said AAI Chairman George Salem.
