Arab Americans Mourn Steve Yokich
Posted on Tuesday August 20, 2002
Washington, DC – It is with great sorrow that the Arab American Institute and Arab Americans across the United States mourn the loss of Stephen Yokich, president of the United Auto Workers (UAW) from 1995-2002. A union activist for over forty years, Yokich brought workers’ concerns to the bargaining table while advocating social justice and human rights for Americans and workers abroad.
During an era of economic challenges, he dared to bring attention to workers needs. He worked to institute education and training programs and rallied for worker safety, childcare, elder care, and tuition assistance for workers.
Yokich also helped to create the Family Service and Learning Center, named in his honor, to provide educational services to working families in the Detroit area.
Yokich left an incredible legacy of service. He was a great leader who was committed to protecting the rights of working people and fighting for economic justice. A proud Arab American, he was a friend and mentor to the community and tirelessly worked to bring people together. Arab Americans across the country sadly miss his thoughtful leadership.
