The Arab American Institute Foundation is pleased to announce that the Award for Corporate Citizenship will be presented to Participant Media at the 2014 Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala on April 25 in Washington, DC.
Established in 2004 by eBay founder and philanthropist Jeff Skoll, Participant Media is responsible for more than 50 films, of which 36 received Academy Award nominations and 7 earned Academy Awards, including Good Night and Good Luck, North Country, Syriana, An Inconvenient Truth, Lincoln, State 194, and The Square. This year, Participant Media and Ms. Salma Hayek will debut an animated film based on Kahlil Gibran's world-renowned book The Prophet.
We are honored to present the Award to Participant in recognition of its pioneering use of film to inspire and lead social action campaigns that have significant impact locally, nationally, and globally. Participant CEO Jim Berk will accept the award on Participant's behalf.
At Gibran, our community has always recognized the great value of leaders of social justice. Participant has pioneered the groundbreaking marriage of entertainment media and social activism, using film as the cornerstone of campaigns to facilitate social change. By pairing each of its films with wide-reaching social action campaigns, Participant mobilizes its audiences to continue the dialogue around the pressing social issues their films explore. Whether distributing petitions, screening their films in communities across the country or holding briefings on Capitol Hill, Participant ensures that the conversations started by their films translate into real world change. One campaign, in conjunction with the release of Food, Inc., prompted nearly 250,000 people to petition Congress to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act of 2010.
With its admirable work, Participant Media brings social justice issues to the forefront of national dialogue.
