Michele Bachmann is the first Republican woman to represent Minnesota in Congress. She was a candidate for the Republican Party presidential nomination, but suspended her campaign in January 2012. She advocates tax reform, banning same-sex marriage, teaching creationism alongside evolution in classrooms, and pursuing renewable and domestic energy. She says she is a strong supporter of Israel and that by pursuing U.N. recognition, Palestine is undermining the peace process. Although she has been accused of Islamophobia, Bachmann has denied this fact multiple times.
