Yalla Vote Phone Banking
You helped us mobilize the Arab American Vote during the 2008 elections, and we are asking for your help once again this year. Election Day is now less than 25 days away, which means that we need your help now, more than ever, to sign up and make calls for the Yalla Vote phone banks being held across the country. All you need is a little time, a phone and a computer.
Please watch the short video tutorial on how to set up and use the Yalla Vote Virtual Phone Bank. Contact Hilary if you have any additional questions.
Here’s how the phone banks work:
Who can participate?
Anyone with a phone and internet connection! We’re asking that you take a few hours between now and November – you can break it up into 20 minute chunks of time, or sit down for an afternoon. Joining a local phone bank is an easy way to meet new people or volunteer with friends, and you can make calls from almost anywhere.
What is a phone bank?
You’ll be using a virtual phone bank system to call Arab American voters in your state and encourage them to vote this year, to update their voter registration, and to ensure others get out to the polls on Election Day. You can log in to this online system and the voter’s information will pop up on your screen along with the script and questions to answer. AAI staff are always available to help you if you need it.
Whether you’re joining a local phone bank or hosting a party at your house, each volunteer shift should ideally be 3 hours, and each volunteer should be able to make about 110-130 calls in total per shift. These calls are nonpartisan so everyone, including nonprofits, cultural groups, and more, can participate.
Where can I make calls?
At your home, office, or a community center - wherever you can use a computer and a phone. Currently, AAI has access to voter databases in the following states: California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, District of Columbia and Virginia. If you do not live in one of these states, that’s not a problem – we still need your help making calls to Arab American voters outside of your area.
When should I start calling?
Phone banks will run from Sept. 24th through November 6th. There is still time to get people registered to vote, so calls in the next couple weeks will be just as important as those right before the election. Phone banks can be scheduled anytime, but the best time to call is during the day on weekends as well as weekday evenings between 5:00-9:00pm.
How do I get started?
Sign up here and AAI will send you an email with login information, a script to follow, and the link to the online voter database. The new system is similar to the one we used in 2008, and there have been significant improvements since then. All information can be entered with a simple click online while you’re on the call, so you will not need to document any responses or keep your own paperwork. We are aiming to reach 10,000 Arab American voters before the election, but with your help we can reach thousands more.
If you’re able to host an event, let us know at least one week in advance how many people will be volunteering and we will send you a free Yalla Vote package with t-shirts and other materials. For additional questions, please contact Emily at firstname.lastname@example.org.
It’s your voice, and your vote. Help get out the Arab American Vote in 2012!
