2011 Arab American Service Day

ARAB AMERICAN SERVICE DAY
Storytelling & Bookmaking Workshop

On May 14th, the Arab American Institute Foundation and the Network of Arab American Professionals will be hosting a storytelling and bookmaking workshop for local youth, as part of the National Arab American Service Day. Service Day is hosted in conjunction with National AmeriCorps Week to further the discussion and growth of national service in the public realm.

The workshop will be hosted by 826, a literacy advocacy group co-founded by renowned author Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius). Over the course of two hours students will create, illustrate and publish a story sprung from their collective imagination, combining group storytelling with individual creativity. Each student leaves with his or her own published book, made on the spot with the help of 826 and our community volunteers.

Please see the following video for a demonstration of a similar workshop at 826 Boston: http://vimeo.com/6072727

The workshop will take place on May 14th at 10am at 3233 14th St NW, Washington, DC. It promises to be a fun, educational, and unforgettable experience, and we would like you to participate! If you have a child between the ages of 6 and 10 who would be interested in attending, or if you like to volunteer, please contact Samer Araabi at saraabi@aaiusa.org or (202) 652-4984. Space is limited and registration is required.
