U.S. Hollywood star Salma Hayek told Al Arabiya News in an interview this week that she was “proud” of the Lebanese people for taking in some 1.2 million Syrian refugees, despite decades of animosity between the two countries.

“I have to say that I’m extra proud because the Syrians could be considered as their enemies, or were once because of the war, and I’m very proud that my people give an example and [have] opened their doors even to those who they’ve been in conflict with, because of their humanity and their generosity,” the 48-year-old actress told Al Arabiya correspondent Muna Shikaki in Washington DC.

The Mexican-born Hayek, who traces her Lebanese roots from her grandfather, was speaking about her activism and work with Syrian refugees – particularly women and children.

The 48-year-old actress, who helped launch a non-profit group entitled, Chime for the Children of Syria, met earlier this week with Syrian refugees to draw attention to the urgent humanitarian crisis caused by the 4 year Syrian war.

Asked why it was important for a celebrity to be involved with the humanitarian situation of Syrian refugees, Hayek said: “I don’t think it’s important for a celebrity like me. I think it’s important for everyone…. I just happen to be a celebrity who got involved.”
