Linda Sarsour continues to make the community proud by broadening the scope of Arab American participation in public service. Sarsour was recently appointed to the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn Community Board 10, a local body of community leaders with a diverse membership. Sarsour is the third Arab American appointed to the Board. Recognition of Sarsour’s status as a vocal and effective advocate for the Arab American community earned her the appointment from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. Markowitz also noted Sarsour’s fiery personality, telling Brooklyn Daily that she is a “real fighter.” He’s right; among other things, Sarsour has brought the Arab American perspective center stage on a number of New York’s most important issues, including the bipartisan City Council legislation to create an Inspector General for the NYPD. She has never shied away from speaking up for what she believes in, and has done the community a great service with her courage.
On a national level, Sarsour has been racking up some very prestigious accolades and special recognitions. Recently, she was named a Champion of Change by the by the White House. Her profile said the following:
Linda Sarsour is a working woman, community activist, and mother of three. Ambitious, outspoken and independent, Linda shatters stereotypes of Muslim women while also treasuring her religious and ethnic heritage. Currently she is the Advocacy and Civic Engagement Coordinator … read on.
As her profile continues to grow, Sarsour’s style of advocacy remains consistent, and that is precisely why she retains the respect she does from government, various community and advocacy organizations, and community members. With confidence and candor, she lets you know her mind, and even those who don’t agree with her respect her opinions. In today’s Brooklyn Daily article, Chip Cafiero, one of Sarsour’s fellow board members, said Sarsour “represents a large contingent of the community, and she’ll do a good job.” As the article notes, Cafiero’s praise comes despite the two disagreeing on a number of issues. We're sure Sarsour will keep reaching and higher and we look forward to writing about her amazing achievements and work with the community which are most certainly yet to come.comments powered by Disqus
