Running for Office

In California, Sharon Beery is running for U.S. Representative in District 22. Beery, of Lebanese descent, is the only Democrat running to replace 14-term Republican Bill Thomas, who will not be running for re-election.

Also, the Arab American Caucus of the CA Democratic Party met in conjunction with the state convention, elected a new Chair and a new Northern California Vice Chair, Maha Ibrahim. Several candidates addressed the Caucus, including: Sharon Beery who is running in the 22nd district; Ferial Masry, candidate for the 37th Assembly District, current state Controller Steve Westly, who is running for Governor; and John Garamendi Jr. who is vying to become California’s Lieutenant Governor.

A Royal Welcome in California

NPC member Dr. Raymond Jallow invited several Arab American leaders to join him in a reception honoring the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the U.S., Prince Turki Al-Faisal, for a luncheon conducted by Town Hall of Los Angeles at the Baltimore Hotel. Prince Turki discussed U.S.-Saudi relations and how to encourage tolerance among followers of Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

...And for the Left

In California, Wafaa Aborashed collected the signatures of 40 fellow Democrats in the 16th Assembly District to complete the forms necessary to place her name on the June 6 primary election ballot for a position on the Alameda County Central Committee.

Left-Coasters Unite for the Right

On March 19th, Johnny Khamis, Joe Louis, Paul Ajlouni, the Ramallah Club of San Jose and the Silicon Valley Arab American Council held a fundraiser for San Jose, CA, mayoral candidate Chuck Reed, and over 55 people attended. The Silicon Valley Arab American Council is also working hard to increase Arab American involvement in California’s 11th Congressional District Republican primary race between Pete McCloskey and incumbent Richard Pombo. The primary election is June 6th. If you would like to get involved, contact Johnny Khamis at khamis@wisdirect.com or (408) 278-8355.

All Politics is Local

In Northern California, AAI National Policy Council Members Johnny Khamis of San Jose and John Bader of San Bruno have been busy wearing a number of hats: They are Vice President and Regional Vice President of the California Congress of Republicans (CCR), members of the Republican Arab American Congress (RAAC) of San Jose, and members of the Arab American Council of Silicon Valley.

The CCR, an organization of grassroots Republican moderates, recently held an endorsement convention in Riverside, CA. At that convention, Johnny and John, as members of RAAC, helped ensure that State Senator Able Moldenado, candidate for State Controller, and Steve Poisner, candidate for CA Insurance commissioner, won the endorsement of the CCR over other candidates who, unlike Moldenado and Poisner, had not shown an interest in meeting with the RAAC. CCR endorsements have been publicized and will be reinforced in a newspaper which goes out to the 5000 households most likely to vote in the June primary election.

The RAAC will be meeting on February 22 to discuss important statewide and Santa Clara county races, and make plans for the Republican State Convention, to be held in San Jose on Feb 24-26.

In Southern California, Nazir Hussein and the Orange County Arab American Republican Club recently held a fundraiser for Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska) who has been good on issues of concern to the Arab American community.
