Montgomery County, Maryland, kicked off its annual Arab American Heritage Festival last night. Local elected officials, Arab Americans and other community members and candidates gathered at the Montgomery County Executive Office building for an evening of music, poetry and speeches by AAI Executive Director Nidal Ibrahim and ADC President Mary Rose Oakar. County Council President George Leventhal noted the growth and diversity of the population of Montgomery County, saying: “Every resident is entitled to the same dignity and respect as every other resident of the county. Whatever language was spoken as a child, and whatever place of worship attended on Friday or Saturday or Sunday, this is the place we have chosen as our home.”
Among the events to follow in the county will be an afternoon of Arab American storytelling, henna hand painting, arts and crafts, traditional clothing and musical instruments at the Gaithersburg Public Library on April 22.
