In Ohio’s 10th Congressional District, AAI National Policy Council member Bassam Khawam hosted a fundraiser in his home for the re-election campaign of Congressman Dennis Kucinich. The 32 attendees enjoyed a three-hour, face-to-face meeting with the congressman. Topics ranged from America’s healthcare crisis to business and economic concerns to foreign policy issues. Congressman Kucinich represented himself as very globally aware and committed to the issues of the Arab American community. Kucinich said he now feels compelled to consider a delegation trip to the Middle East to “see for himself” and assess the situation on the ground with other members of the House. More than $16,000 was raised, and those who attended committed to volunteering their time for the Kucinich campaign. Several members of the Arab American community attended his major rally and fundraiser the following day at the IX center in Cleveland, Ohio. The rally was joined by many local political leaders from the Democratic party, judges, and gubernatorial candidates; and by actor and self-reported “fan of Kucinich,” Michael Douglas. The primary election is on May 2.
…Also in Ohio, Arab American Democratic candidate Barbara Anne Ferris won the endorsement of The Plain Dealer newspaper. Ferris is challenging Kucinich in the 10th District. In its April 23 editorial, The Plain Dealer says that Ferris is “the Democrat more in tune with the community, its needs and its future.”
Also of note…Thor Jacobs, Arab American Democratic congressional candidate in Ohio’s 2nd District, has released a detailed analysis of the war in Iraq and his proposed exit plan for U.S. troops.
