Arab American Democrats Barbara Ferris (D-OH) and Thor Jacobs (D-OH) ran impressive campaigns, though they were unsuccessful in the May 2 primary. Jacobs received 23% of the vote in a 5-way race, and Ferris earned 24% running against Congressman Dennis Kucinich. Nonetheless, Arab American efforts to mobilize for political participation did not go unnoticed. AAI NPC member Bassam Khawam worked hard on “Get Out To Vote” (GOTV) calls to encourage the Arab American community in Cleveland to vote in the primary on May 2.
Congressman Kucinich held an event the night before the primary at The Beit Hanina Social Club in Cleveland and made a point of telling Arab Americans who gathered that he chose to spend the evening before the election with them when he could have been anywhere else. The Social Club was used on primary day as a polling place with 10 new voting machines. Nice work Ohioans!
