Alabama- How to Become a Member of Your Local Party Committee

The most local level of organization for both the Republican-Democratic Parties in Alabama is the County Committee.

Members of this committee are called County Committee Members, and are elected to a 2 year term during the Primary Election in June of even numbered years.

The filing deadline to run for this position during the next election is: April 7th, 2006
The next election will be: June 06, 2006

To become a member of this committee through the regular election process:

1. You must be 18 years of age, registered to vote as a member of the party you are interested in and a current resident of the appropriate county.

2. You should make your interest known by speaking to your County Chair, who can tell you who the current County Committee Members are, and possibly whether they are likely to run for re-election.

3. You must declare your interest in becoming a member by filing a form which may be picked up from your county chair and must be returned to him/her by deadline above. In some counties there is a modest filing fee in others like Jefferson and Mobil Committees there is no fee. The specific rules for filing in vary from county to county. Your county chair is the best resource for more information. Contact information can be found on the websites listed below.

4. You must receive sufficient votes on the ballot in the June Primary election

It is often possible to join the committee between regular elections:

• Mid-term vacancies are frequent and openings filled through appointment by the County Committee Chair, so the chances to join one of these committees, even if it’s not an election year, are quite high.

• There are often other opportunities to get involved without yet being a formal member of the committee – volunteer to help, people will come to know you, and you will increase your chances of becoming a member through the next regular election
