DNC Chairman Howard Dean Meets with Arab Americans in Michigan
Posted on Tuesday November 15, 2005
On November 15, 2005, as part of Governor Howard Dean’s first visit to the state of Michigan as Democratic Party chairman he met with a broad spectrum of Arab American leaders.
AAI’s Dr. James Zogby, a member of the Democratic National Committee Executive Committee, attended the event with a delegation of Arab Americans including the Mayor of Wayne, Al Haidous, Ish Ahmad, and state representative Barbara Farrah. A roundtable was held to discuss various domestic and foreign policy issues and Arab American involvement in politics.
Gov. Dean also toured the Arab American National Museum and enjoyed viewing the exhibits about Arab American history. Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer also attended the event and praised the community’s role in Michigan politics and urged Arab Americans to be on the Democratic ticket for Michigan state offices.
Dr. Zogby praised Gov. Dean for reaching out to Arab Americans. “Governor Dean showed extraordinary respect for the Arab American community during his first official visit as party chair to the state. When we look back to twenty years ago, we see significant progress in the political empowerment of Arab Americans, and much of that is due to Arab American activism, and to the openness of the Democratic Party and its leadership in working with our community.”
