More than 70 candidates for state and local office addressed a sold out audience of over 300 Arab Americans at AAI’s 19th annual Virginia Candidates’ Night on Sunday, Sept. 23. Thanks to the hard work of the event’s steering committee, the evening attracted candidates from throughout Northern Virginia running for offices including State Senate, House of Delegates, County Board of Supervisors and School Board.
U.S. Rep. Tom Davis made a surprise appearance, giving remarks on the contributions of Arab Americans to Virginia’s civic life and the need for more civility in politics. Del. Brian Moran read a letter from Gov. Tim Kaine, who called Virginia Candidates’ Night “Northern Virginia’s largest, oldest, and most successful new Americans’ forum.”
Marwan Burgan, a member of AAI’s National Policy Council and longtime Steering Committee member, received the evening’s Distinguished Public Service Award in recognition of his “civic and political activism for the Arab American community in Virginia.”
