Running for Congress
AAI Bulletin
Posted on Wednesday June 7, 2006
In the 11th Congressional District, AAI NPC member Marwan Burgan and AAI member, ADC DC Chapter Board member, and Fairfax County Democratic Committee member Mona Hamoui, with the support of fellow FCDC member Paul Noursi and long time activist Jamal Najjab, organized a meet-and-greet and fundraising event for Congressional primary candidate Ken Longmyer. Longmyer pointed out that given the typically low voter turnout in primary elections (approximately one of every 25 registered voters actually casting a ballot), any community that mobilizes itself in the primary could decide the outcome, and thus an Arab American Get Out the Vote effort could have a large impact on the outcome of this primary. Longmyer developed first-hand understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian issue and personal friendships with many Palestinians through his Foreign Service experience as Vice Consul in Jerusalem. In addition to his even-handed position on Israel/Palestine, the event organizers also appreciate Longmyer’s friendship with the Arab American community and his support for civil liberties and civil rights.
The VA primary is June 13th. For a complete list of candidates running for this seat, and links to their websites, go to Virginia Voter Guide.
