Protest Justice Gorsuch at Trump Hotel Event

When: Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM

Where: Trump Hotel in Washington, DC

Details: Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch is the keynote speaker at The Fund for American Studies’ (TFAS) “Defending Freedom Luncheon” next Thursday, September 28 at the Trump International Hotel in DC. Justice Gorsuch’s participation is problematic both because of the venue and the host. First, by lending his credibility—and presumably that of the court—to an event at a hotel where the president has an undeniable financial interest, Justice Gorsuch allows his impartiality to be called into question regarding matters related to President Trump. Second, the group he is speaking before, TFAS, has ties to anti-Muslim groups through mutual funders. The Center for American Progress (CAP) has documented that a TFAS donor, the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, has contributed $6.5 million dollars to anti-Muslim organizations and individuals from 2001 to 2012 alone. We believe this is noteworthy as Justice Gorsuch will hear arguments about the Muslim/refugee ban less than two weeks after the TFAS luncheon.

AAI Ahwa: Moving a Divided America Forward with Del. Sam Rasoul (D-11)

When: Monday, October 02, 2017 at 06:00 PM

Where: AAI Office in Washington, DC

Google Calendar: Add this event to your Google Calendar

Details: In the aftermath of the white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, we hosted a community town hall last month, an AAI Ahwa with AAI President Jim Zogby. We had a good, albeit sometimes difficult conversation, with many different communities represented. For us, it underscored the importance of building relationships and partnerships that make all of us stronger in the face of these turbulent times – and the need to keep convening these conversations. To that end, we would like to invite you to our next AAI Ahwa, a town hall with Virginia Delegate Sam Rasoul (D-11) on Monday, Oct. 2nd at 6:30 pm at our office. An Arab American who was the first Muslim elected to Virginia’s House of Delegates, Sam has been representing his home town of Roanoke since 2014, and has an established record of reaching across party lines. Indeed, Sam made headlines when he demanded that his fellow Democratic state legislators work across the aisle, including reaching out to Trump voters. In a highly polarized political environment, that was noticed. But for those of us who know Sam, working through differences is what he does and it has made for a significantly more effective approach. Join us as we discuss what we can all do to foster productive dialogue and action in solidarity with one another during this hyper-partisan climate.
