Watch Live: Empowering a Movement Through Online Activism
One year after the spark of the Arab Spring, we remain inspired by the courageous efforts of ordinary people across the Arab world to rise up and change their countries. In recent months, Arab Americans across the country have engaged in various efforts to change the national narrative on a number of important issues facing our community. In October, a coalition of Arab American organizations launched Yalla Change, a national campaign devoted to bringing about the change we need here at home.
Tomorrow, AAI is connecting young political, social and human rights activists from the U.S. and Middle East to share ideas about empowering the community to bring about positive change through online activism and direct action. Our discussion will feature Syrian cyber activist Rami Nakhle and co-host of Al Jazeera’s “The Stream”Ahmed Shihab-Eldin. We will also be joined by an outstanding group of Egyptians students visiting the U.S.
Tune in to our live stream channel and participate by tweeting questions and comments to @AAIUSA and using the hashtag #YallaChange.
More Information on our guest speakers:
Rami Nakhle
Prior to the uprisings in Syria, Nakhle’s online activism made him a target for Syrian secret police. Last December, Nakhle was forced to flee Syria in fear for his life. Ever since, Nakhle has been a vanguard force, actively shaping the online effort to organize Syria protestors and tell the world about the plight of the Syrian people under Assad.
Ahmed Shihab-Eldin
Ahmed is digital producer and co-host of “The Stream” a new online community with a daily TV show on Al Jazeera that taps into the extraordinary potential of social media to help us understand the world's untold stories. We all know that social media has been instrumental in helping to mobilize the Arab uprisings, and The Stream’s coverage of the unfolding events has been exceptional.
