Taking Community Concerns Directly to Napolitano

Today AAI, along with 37 ethnic and religious organizations, sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano and Acting Inspector General, Charles K Edwards. The letter officially requests DHS “undertake a comprehensive publicly-reported audit of the civil rights impact of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) airport screening policies on racial and religious minorities.” The letter cites multiple disturbing reports of abuse by TSA agents deliberately targeting individuals for extra screening based on ethnic and religious background. In 2008, a similar letter was sent directly to the TSA voicing community concerns about profiling, however the TSA failed to address the issue.

In addition to requesting the audit, AAI and our partners in this effort are asking for a meeting with Secretary Napolitano and DHS officials to make sure the community’s concerns are properly addressed.
