Jimmy Carter on “America’s Shameful Human Rights Record”

“The United States is abandoning its role as the global champion of human rights,” warned former President Jimmy Carter in a New York Times op-ed earlier this week.

President Carter does a great job of systematically exploring the recent erosions of our global human rights record. Between the extensive drone campaign, the targeted assassinations of American citizens overseas, indefinite detention provisions in the NDAA, and other collateral damage of our “anti-terrorism” initiatives, Carter argues, “our country can no longer speak with moral authority on these critical issues.”

AAI has been advocating on many of these concerns for some years now, but the article is a great compilation of some of the most egregious encroachments on our civil liberties in the past few years.
