Israeli officials say talks with US reached “dead end”
According to Israeli press reports, Israeli officials have said that negotiations with the US to extend the settlement moratorium have failed, and that the failure is expected to be formally announced by both governments today. The reports indicate that the US will now look for alternate means to push the peace process forward.
If these reports are confirmed, it would show that Israel views continued settlement expansion in the occupied territories as preferable to the very generous package of military and diplomatic support the Obama Administration was willing to give in exchange for the freeze extension. This raises even further doubts about whether Israel can volunterily take the minimum steps needed to achieve a two-state solution with the Palestinians. Whatever the next phase may be, it isn’t off to a good start.
