House Subcommittee on Immigration…uhh Enforcement

Yesterday, the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement held its first hearing of the 112th Congress on what it called, “ICE Worksite Enforcement – Up to the Job?”  The title of the hearing reiterates where the focus is: enforcement and border security, not reforming immigration laws. Testimony, which can be found here, focused primarily on the numbers of arrests and removals made in association with worksite raids and a speculative connection linking an increase in available jobs for U.S. citizens to worksite raids.  

Among the things not addressed, however, were, how raids impact immigrant communities, how employers have taken advantage of immigrant labor, and finally how worksite raids might correct the broken immigration system.  Yesterday’s hearing  seems to demonstrate that enforcement only, and not reform is at the forefront of the House subcommittee.
