Helen Abbott Community Service Awards
Each year, the Arab American Institute Foundation (AAIF) honors high school and college students with the Helen Abbott Community Service Award. Helen Abbott was a philanthropist and friend of AAIF, who worked tirelessly to make affordable housing available for disadvantaged members of the Lincoln Park Community in Fort Pierce, Florida. Before she passed away in 1999, Ms. Abbott succeeded in developing twenty-two homes in Lincoln Park, and a community park was later established there in her memory. She made a generous bequest to AAIF, which is now used to recognize youth community leadership through the Helen Abbott Community Service Award.
The award seeks to honor the “devotion to community service, selfless acts of care, and interest in improving the quality of life for others” that were characteristic of Helen Abbott. The Foundation gives up to two $1,000 awards to university students who exemplify these traits, and one $500 award to an outstanding high school student. This year’s applications are due April 13, 2012, and should be mailed to the Arab American Institute at the following address:
