Kemal Amen Kasem, better known as Casey Kasem, is the recipient of the 2013 Award for Individual Achievement at this year’s Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala on April 16.
A widely recognized and cherished voice, a broadcast icon and Hollywood star, Casey has been a radio broadcaster for over 40 years and a dominant figure in the industry. He is known by many as the host of "American Top 40" and "Casey's Countdown," as well as the "voice of NBC," and even as Shaggy from "Scooby Doo."
As a host of national and international radio and television programs, Casey shared messages of optimism with his audience of over 10 million listeners. He has also been stalwart advocate for domestic and international concerns, from Middle East peace to environmental issues, homelessness, healthcare, and civil rights. While strongly committed to defending the rights of all Americans, Kasem has been a guiding force in the Arab American community. An avid supporter of Arab American civic participation, Casey has challenged negative stereotypes of Arab Americans in popular and civic cultures. He also helped establish several institutions, while promoting cooperation and unity among the many ethnic organizations that serve our community.
"Casey is more than the most recognized voice of his generation," said AAI President Jim Zogby. "What he said mattered. His inspired us to be positive, to strive for peace and justice, and to care for each other and our planet. He is great friend and a mentor"
Casey always told his listeners to “reach for the stars.” This year, we are honored to celebrate the myriad and tremendous contributions of our community’s brightest star.
