Direct ‘Final Status’ Negotiations Announced

Earlier today, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton announced the resumption of direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are set to meet in Washington, DC on September 2nd. Secretary Clinton noted that the aim of the negotiations was “to resolve all final status issues, which we believe can be completed within one year.”

President Obama has also invited President Mubarak of Egypt, King Abdullah of Jordan, and Quartet Representative Tony Blair to participate in talks in light of the roles they play in the efforts to achieve peace in the region. Secretary Clinton recognized that “there have been difficulties in the past; there will be difficulties ahead,” but insisted that such difficulties should not deter the parties from vigorously pursuing a peace agreement. A questioner asked:
