Amir Omar Racking up Endorsements in Richardson Mayoral Bid

Former City Council Member Amir Omar is racking up endorsements in his bid for Mayor of Richardson, Texas. In a recent vote, the city’s electorate moved to change the previous system of selecting a Mayor by way of the City Council. The city will now directly elect its leader by popular vote. Although he was aware that the move would eliminate his seat on the City Council, Omar was a strong proponent for the switch, saying in an email to supporters that “this is a positive change for our City. Richardson has been blessed with and deserves a Mayor who works directly for the families and businesses of our community.” Omar has served on Richardson’s City Council Seat 7 since he was first elected in May 2009. Seat 7 was the only one which was eliminated by the vote.
If elected, Amir Omar will not only make history as the first Mayor in Richardson’s history to be elected by popular vote, but will also be the first Arab American to hold the office. So far “Amir Omar for Mayor” has garnered an impressive 57 endorsements from groups and individuals that support his pursuit of the office. We will keep a close eye on the race and update you as things progress.
