Jon Stewart takes on Opponents of Religious Freedom
Last night, Jon Stewart delivered some punches, as The Daily Show devoted two segments to ridiculing opponents of the proposed Islamic center in lower Manhattan. In the first segment, Stewart not only took on media coverage and high-profile rightwing politicians like Newt Gingrich who oppose the center, but also went on to highlight the anti-Muslim sentiment that has taken root in different parts of the country. In the second segment, a Daily Show correspondent plays the role of an Islamophobe sorting through New York City in search for a secret Muslim plot, only to discover (to his artificial horror) that the Muslim community has long been part and parcel of New York’s wider community. Nothing can convey the absurdity of bigotry better (or funnier) than satire, and The Daily Show is once again proving exceptionally adept at it. Simply excellent!
