Governor Rick Scott's controversial voter purge was revitalized last week, when the Department of Homeland Security granted Florida access to its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database. The SAVE database will give election officials the identification numbers of non-citizens living legally in the United States, providing Gov. Scott's administration with another method of adding names to the list of those considered ineligible to vote. Read More »

In New Jersey’s newly-drawn ninth congressional district, something interesting is happening. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, Bill Pascrell’s Republican opponent for the district’s congressional seat, is trying to court the Arab American vote. Over the weekend, Boteach called up AAI Board of Governors member Sherine El-Abd, who also serves as Chairwoman of the New Jersey Arab American Republican Caucus, and asked her to accompany him during his weekend walk-through of South Paterson. After making an important statement about the strength of organized and motivated Arab American communities in the New Jersey primary between Reps. Bill Pascrell and Steve Rothman, Arab Americans around the country are looking to replicate their success in a number of key congressional races. One such race is in Ohio’s 9th Congressional district, where Rep. Marcy Kaptur will face Samuel “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher. Read More »

Earlier this month, we wrote about a democratic primary in North Jersey between Bill Pascrell and Steve Rothman, in which we noted a new standard for Arab American engagement in the political process. Jim Zogby said Pascrell’s victory was evidence of an Arab American political "coming of age," showing that the community could come out in support of a candidate, get out the vote and help get them elected. That is precisely what the community did in New Jersey's 9th district for Bill Pascrell, and it is exactly why efforts have been mounted to vilify Arab American voters in New Jersey and beyond. The President’s performance as of late, according to analysis by AAI Board Member and Pollster John Zogby, has been relatively dismal overall. However, despite the unimpressive performance, Zogby says the President is “pretty much where he needs to be” election-wise. Overall, at this point, Zogby has not made a prediction of who will win the race but says the contest is “pretty much the President’s to lose.” Romney, he says, “will have a very difficult time broadening the [Republican] base.” Read More »

In the wake of President Obama’s recent immigration decision, Maryland voters will have their own chance to decide on their state’s DREAM Act. The Maryland version of the immigration bill would provide in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants who could prove that they had attended Maryland high schools for at least three years and that their parents had filed taxes. AAI Board Member and pollster John Zogby delivered an important message on the role of young voters in the American political process. Zogby is starting to make the media rounds ahead of the election, highlighting the important constituencies that will define the presidential race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The race is already shaping up to be highly contentious, and if national attitudes toward Romney and Obama remain the same throughout the race, the two will battle it out neck-and-neck in a near-dead heat. With numbers so tight, every vote will count. Read More »

Political pollster John Zogby published two pieces recently on Forbes.com, indicating which factors will be most crucial in determining the winner of the upcoming presidential elections. He argues that, for both the Obama and Romney campaigns, it will be more important to attempt to maximize votes from usually supportive demographic groups than to attempt to sway the middle.
