Ending Emergency Law In Syria?

Clashes between anti-government protesters and government forces in Daraa have left at least dozens dead, and possibly more than 100 according to one eyewitness.In response to the unrest, the Syrian government indicated that it was considering major reforms. In an announcement today, the government said it was studying officially ending the state of emergency under which the country has been governed since the 1960s, and which allows for individuals to be imprisoned without charge or trial.  Read More »

AAI President Jim Zogby appeared on Sky News "Live at Five" yesterday to discuss Arab perceptions of the current situation in Libya. He addressed the question of whether or not further Arab involvement in the assault against Moammar Gaddafi's forces in Libya is warranted. President Obama Delivers Ultimatum to Gaddafi

President Barack Obama kicked off his speech by saying that Gaddafi had “lost the confidence” of his own people and the legitimacy to lead, noting that he has chosen large scale repression and violence against his people in an effort to stay in power. Obama presented Gaddafi with a “choice” to meet conditions (ceasing the advance towards Benghazi and ending attacks on civilians) that are “not negotiable” or face military strikes. Read More »

Arab Americans at the White House and on the Hill

On Thursday, April 22, the Arab American Institute (AAI), in cooperation with the National Network of Arab American Communities (NNAAC), hosted over 80 Arab American leaders from across the country for an Arab American Leadership Day in Washington DC.
