AAFS and AmeriCorps Vista Join Forces

By Emily Jabareen
On November 11th, Arab American Family Services (AAFS) will host a dinner entitled “Breaking Bread, Building Bridges” in association with AmeriCorps Vista. The dinner will highlight the history that the Arab American community and the U.S. Army have shared, and will announce the launch of a project in collaboration with AmeriCorps Vista that will bring together US veterans who served in the Middle East and at-risk immigrant and refugee youth in a tutoring program that is aimed at connecting both groups in a supportive academic setting. The program will aid immigrant and refugee children, particularly those from the Middle East, to view the US military more positively. Read More »

From Ramallah to Silicon Valley

By Emily Jabareen
Stretched along a Ramallah street, building offices are bustling with the sound of a developing tech industry on the cusp of takeoff. The offices operate in an almost different dimension of reality, where companies emerge at the click of a button, and long-distance business relations are not subject to the suffocating language of borders, sovereignty, and occupation. Commentary Should Be Renamed “Paranoia Magazine”

This is like a man wrongly accusing a woman of stealing his wife’s purse, but rather than apologizing upon realizing that the woman was in fact holding her own purse, says instead, “you idiot, you must have stolen your own purse.” Read More »

Daniel Levy on “America’s attempted Quartet sophistry”

Daniel Levy, director of the Middle East Task Force at the New America Foundation, wrote a great piece in Foreign Policy magazine last week in which he concluded that "American policy on Israel-Palestine is now being driven almost exclusively by a desire to prevent any possible U.N. vote" on Palestinian statehood this fall. Read More »

Stealth Provision Offers War Blank Check

Last night, the House Armed Service Committee finished marking up the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Buried deep within the Act is a provision, added by committee chairman Rep. Buch McKeon (R-CA), which seemingly offers a blank check for the executive branch to wage war without geographic, time, or justificatory constraints. According to a press release by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Read More »

Tragic Attack on Humanitarian Relief Efforts Consistent with Failed, Brutal Israeli Policy

We are outraged by the reports of causalities in the latest flashpoint of the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We condemn Israel’s attack upon a convoy of ships delivering much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza and the resulting loss of civilian life and causalities. Read More »
