The Arab Spring and Iran: A New Regional Dynamic

Yesterday, AAI President Jim Zogby joined Geneive Adbo and Ted Piccone in a panel discussion hosted by the National Security Network (NSN) and the Project on Middle East Democracy to address the current state of political affairs in the Arab world and Iran. Pro-democracy movements in several Arab countries are causing regional dynamics with Iran to shift. NSN Executive Director Heather Hurlburt moderated the panel. Read More »

International Condemnation as Syrian Crackdown Continues

Despite strong international condemnation from a number of states and interstate organizations, the Syrian government has continued its assault on the Eastern towns of Hama and Deir al-Zour. Repressing the Arab Spring in the Post Privacy Era

Not long ago (many of us still remember it), we had a certain degree of confidence in our ability to lead a private life. But with the technological evolution of the last few decades, most significantly the development of the internet as a primary tool of communication, any real sense of privacy now seems like a fading memory. Between the decreased costs of surveillance technology, our increased reliance on telecommunications, our common use of GPS systems, our frequent and voluntary posting of personal info, locations, and thoughts on social media, and everyone walking around with camera phones ready to capture every noteworthy moment, life is no longer as loose or anonymous as it once was. People like Anthony Weiner paid a pretty heavy price for pretending otherwise. Read More »

Arab American Group Provides Urgently Needed Medical Supplies in Arab World

I wanted to draw your attention to the work of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA). Today NAAMA sent out a press release announcing their efforts to provide "urgently needed" medical supplies throughout the Arab World. The release cites the abysmal state of emergency medical care in Arab countries and highlights the organization's commitment to provide supplies where they are needed. NAAMA's future goal is to "have funds available not only for the ongoing tragedy in Libya but to have contingency plans for emergency medical relief wherever the need may suddenly arise in other parts of the Arab world."  Read More »
