New Diaspora TV Program Needs to Share Women’s Narrative

By Mehrunisa Qayyum
When a man is shot to death, that is a crime. But when a woman is raped by security forces, that amounts to a war crime, according to the Geneva Convention’s Chapter 32, Rule 93. So if investing in a strategy to better articulate why the international community should care about what is taking place in Syria, then why not make the case by starting from a stronger point, like rape as a war crime? Read More »

The Real Victory Still Lies Ahead

Even though Obama’s re-election is a small victory for advocates of civil liberties and global peace, these ideals are far from assured. What we won yesterday is little more than the possibility of future success, the hope that cool heads in the second Obama administration will be able and willing to see past the mistakes of the first. Read More »

Massive Beirut Bombing Follows Alarming UN Report on Lebanon

The tragic news of a massive bombing in Eastern Beirut today, killing at least 8 and injuring dozens more (reports are still pouring in at the time of writing this blog), raises further concerns about the possibility of larger scale violence taking place in the country. Refugee camps in Jordan and Lebanon are already overcrowded, absorbing around 200,000 people, and UNHCR has recently reported than an estimated 3,000 Syrians flee the country daily, broadening the implications of the conflict as the fallout spills over into neighboring states.  Read More »
